The biggest Korean heat wave to hit our northern shores

KPOP Music Wave 2017 the biggest Korean pop concert to be held in the northern region is set to turn up the heat on 25 November 2017 at Setia Spice, Penang. Presented by Golden Warriors Film & Entertainment (“GWFE”) and supported by the Penang Tourism Board, the concert will be the biggest gathering of the hottest Korean stars in one night. The line-up features international best-selling artistes B.A.P., Haha, Kim Jong Kook, Rain and T-ara as well as local up-and-coming talents d’vocal (dance group) and The Flaming Circle (vocal group).

B.A.P. (Best Absolute Perfect)

In a music scene that is saturated with boy groups, B.A.P. (acronym for Best Absolute Perfect) set out to differentiate themselves with their tougher demeanour, bad boy charms and charismatic on-stage performances. The group’s six members Yongguk, Himchan, Daehyun, Youngjae, Jongup and Zelo are well known for their versatility: perfectly choreographed dance moves, sleek rapping and strong vocals. In 2012, B.A.P.’s debut single Warrior sold over 10,000 copies within two days of release. The corresponding EP titled Warrior made it into Billboard’s World Albums Chart at #10. In March of the same year, the group released its comeback EP titled Power. The EP sold out its initial batch of 30,000 copies and entered at #10 in the Billboard World Album Chart. B.A.P. continued to make its mark in the international music scene with the release of its fifth which was ranked #1 on Billboard World Albums Chart in February 2013. The following year, the group’s first full-length studio album First Sensibility topped the Billboard World Albums Chart upon its release. In 2016, B.A.P. topped the international chart again with the release of its second studio album Noir. Continuing its reign in the international music scene, the group’s single Wake Me Up from its latest EP Rose (released in March 2017) was recognised as the group’s most personal and accomplished single by a Billboard review.



Beautiful and sassy girl group T-ara shines out in the Kpop scene its catchy hook-heavy dance music and an array of visual styles and concepts. The group’s first song Joheun Saram (Ver. 1) was featured in the soundtrack of the hit drama Cinderella Man. In 2009, T-ara released its first debut studio album Absolute First Album and Bo Peep Bo Peep a track from the album bagged five awards in total. In the same year, T-ara was awarded Rookie of the Year with 4minute another girl group at the 24th Golden Disk Awards. T-ara released the super successful single Roly Poly from the EP John Travolta Wannabes which was reported to be the top-grossing and highest-selling single in South Korea in 2011. The single Lovey-Dovey from the album Funky Town (re-released of Black Eyes) has sold more than 3 million digital copies in South Korea in the following year. As one of best-selling girl groups of all time, T-ara was ranked #17 in Forbes Korea’s Top 40 Power Celebrities in 2012. The girls continued their rise to fame with the release of several albums and singles which topped the Billboard Korea Kpop Hot 100 as well as the Billboard Japan Hot 100. In 2015, T-ara was ranked #10 in the List of 16 Best Selling Girl Groups of All Time that was published on Insider Monkey. T-ara’s current line-up: Eunjung, Hyomin, Jiyeong and Qri recently released the album What’s My Name and won first place on The Show. The track My Love is featured in the KBS drama Greatest One-Shot.


Rain (Jung Ji-hoon)

Jung Ji-hoon, popularly known as Rain, is South Korea’s most successful kpop artiste. He debuted as as a member of the now defunct boy band Fanclub in 1998 but Rain made his first big break from his first solo album Bad Guy in 2002. Following the success of the first album and Rain 2 his second albums, Rain released his third solo album It’s Raining in 2004 which topped music charts throughout Asia. In 2006 Rain was listed as one of the “100 Most Influential People Who Shape Our World”. His popularity continued to soar with the release of subsequent albums i.e. Rain’s World and Rainism as well as extensive touring around the globe. In addition to his vocal talent and popping dance moves, Rain’s fame is also attributed to his acting roles in Korean hit dramas (e.g. Full House, A Love to Kill) and movies (e,g, I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK) and international blockbusters (e.g. Ninja Assassin). With millions of fans spanning across the globe, sold-out performances and more than 110 awards won, Rain is truly the King of Kpop.


Haha (Ha Dong-hoon)

Ha Dong-hoon, or better known by his stage name Haha debuted as a singer and rapper of Z-kiri in 2001. The following year he joined What’s Up YO! as a co-host with MC Mong and Jerome To. He rose to fame when he was casted in the third season of Nonstop and later as a regular guest in the hit variety show, X-man. Haha was also a cast of Infinite Challenge, one of the highest rated prime-time shows in South Korea. In 2010, Haha joined Running Man as co-host and received the award for Best Entertainer at the 2011 SBS Entertainment Awards. In was in the show that he formed the musical duo, Running Man Brothers with another Kpop Music Wave headliner Kim Jong Kook. In addition to being a successful entertainer and show host, Haha has released three albums and numerous singles. His music is mostly inspired by his love for reggae. Haha has once mentioned in an interview with The Straits Times that despite his wacky on-screen persona, he is actually a subdued man and a big fan of reggae. In 2016, Haha’s collaboration with Skull featuring Stephen Marley titled Love Inside was ranked top ten in a Jamaican video chart upon its release.


Kim Jong-kook

Multi-talented and multi-award winning Kim Jong Kook debuted as a part of the duo of Turbo in 1995. He pursued his career as a solo singer after the band disbanded and in 2004 made a successful comeback with his second album Evolution. In the same year, Kim was casted in X-Man, one of the biggest variety game shows at that time. Kim skyrocketed to fame with the release of his third album This Is Me, one of the best-selling albums in South Korea in 2005. For this he swept the three top Daesang Awards from SBS, KBS and MBC. After his enlistment, Kim returned as a permanent member of the top-rated reality-variety show Family Outing in 2008. He then joined Running Man in 2010 and proceeded to win Best TV Star Award at the SBS Entertainment Awards the following year. Together with fellow Running Man cast Haha, they formed the duo Running Man Brothers. Albeit his on-screen popularity, Kim continued pursuing his singing career and in 2012 he released his seventh studio album Journey Home which featured Running Man co-stars Haha, Kang Gary and Song Joong-ki. Kim made his singing debut in China with his first single Hate That Happiness Came in 2016.
